Transportation Museum
Car 23 was built in 1906 for the Cleveland, Ohio streetcar system, and came to Nelson in 1924 where it served in the municipal transit system until it was retired in 1949. Many years later, the car was carefully restored to operating condition, and has been running on the waterfront line since 1992. Streetcar 23 is now maintained at a carbarn facility in Lakeside Park, which also houses a special Transportation Museum.
The Transportation Museum is open 7 days a week, noon to 3 pm, from the May long weekend to Thanksgiving. Off-season, the Museum is available for visits every Tuesday and Thursday morning 8 am to noon. Admission is free.
The Museum / Carbarn facility is located just west of the Lakeside Park beach (past the Tennis Courts). Visitors can access the museum by streetcar, of course, or through Lakeside Park - there is no vehicular access to the building (parking is available in the Lakeside Park lot next to the bridge, or in the Soccer Fields parking lot east of the Mall).
