Nelson Police Board Director Marta Abel Provincial Appointment

Marta Abel is a human resource professional with a Master of Labor and Employment Relations and a Certificate in Conflict Resolution and Negotiation. In her human resources work, Marta supports conflict resolution, policy development, inclusive practices, and organizational change. She is committed to fostering respectful workplaces. A dedicated community volunteer and mother, she brings a compassionate perspective to public service. She is honoured to contribute to the Nelson Police Board’s mission.
Nelson Police Board Director Karen Bennett

Karen Bennett is a highly accomplished and dedicated professional with a diverse background in real estate, business ownership, publishing, and community leadership. Her career reflects a proven ability to excel in various roles, from owning and managing businesses to holding leadership positions in community organizations. She is committed to serving the public interest with integrity and accountability. Nelson natives, Karen and her husband chose to return to their roots to raise their family, and the community now enjoys the presence of four generations of family, a testament to her deep connection to the area. Karen's professional journey includes significant roles such as Owner/Realtor at Bennett Family Real Estate since 2021. Her entrepreneurial spirit is evident in the numerous businesses her family has owned. She also has extensive experience in the publishing industry, having served as Publisher of the Nelson Star and Regional Sales Director at Black Press, and owning Bennett Publishing which included several small community newspapers in the South Okanagan. Beyond her professional endeavors, Karen is deeply involved in her community. She has held numerous leadership positions, including Past President of the Nelson & District Chamber of Commerce, and is currently a Board Member of the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy. Her involvement with the Nelson Rotary Club, where she has been a member and board member, spans many years. Additionally, she contributes to the Community Literacy Planning Committee. Her past community service includes board memberships with Touchstones (now the Nelson Museum & Art Gallery) and the Nelson & District Arts Council. Karen also spent many years volunteering with the Nelson Soccer Association as a coach and manager for her children’s teams. Karen's commitment extends to advocacy for mental health. With her family, they have taken a proactive role by initiating a community and school event focused on mental health awareness and have been involved with a national organization dedicated to this cause. Karen’s educational background includes a Leadership Diploma from Thompson Rivers University, and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Victoria. Karen is a dedicated professional with a diverse background and a deep-rooted love for her community of Nelson. Her extensive professional experience is complemented by a strong commitment to community involvement, demonstrated through numerous leadership roles and active participation in organizations focused on literacy, arts, and mental health advocacy.
Nelson Police Board Director Devon Caron

Devon Caron is a nonprofit professional and community leader with experience in operations, fundraising, and public engagement. He currently serves as the Capital Campaign Administrator for the Nelson Civic Theatre Society, supporting the organization’s major development efforts. Devon previously held the role of Operations Manager at the Civic and served as Board Chair of the Nelson & District Arts Council, advancing local arts and culture. With a diploma in Peace and Justice Studies, he also brings experience in restorative justice, volunteer coordination, and civic leadership rooted in equity, inclusion, and public accountability.
Nelson Police Board Director Christine Deynaka

Christine Deynaka is a lawyer with expertise in regulatory compliance, administrative law and ethics. Her background includes experience in social work, health care and law. She has worked on diverse, multi-disciplinary teams in the public and private sectors. She has also served on multiple Boards. She co-authored the textbook, Forensic Psychiatric Evidence (Butterworths, 1999). Ms. Deynaka has a Master of Law from the University of Edinburgh, a Juris Doctor from the University of British Columbia and a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Calgary.

Eric Harris s a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CA) from Nelson, BC, with nearly 15 years of experience in the field. Since August of 2022, he is the owner at Selkirk Accounting serving the Kootenay Region. Alongside his career, Eric has been actively involved with charitable organizations, including Make-A-Wish Canada (formerly Children’s Wish Foundation), Easter Seals of BC, and Movember.

Nelson Police Board Director Matthew Nuttall

Matt Nuttall has an established skill set from a long history of working as a volunteer in various settings. As a volunteer, he has been a council appointee at the City of Vancouver, a certified multi-disciplinary coach and a member of the board of various transportation advocacy committees and sports clubs. A highlight was being an overseas volunteer teacher with the World University Service of Canada. These experiences have led to a natural efficiency in governance, a love for innovating solutions and a delight in getting to know the fellow human beings involved in these organizations.
Throughout all this, Matt continues with a career lasting over three decades at IBM Canada Ltd. He is a specialist in the mainframe, with a sub-specialty in network security. He is the author of various technical publications on IBM mainframe software, including a university textbook.
